Egypt has presented a new offer aimed at getting the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas back on track, two sources familiar with the matter said in Cairo.
An Egyptian functionary said on Monday that Hamas would release five living captures, including an American-born Israeli citizen, in exchange for a week-long ceasefire during which philanthropic aid would be allowed into Gaza. Israel would also release hundreds of Palestinian captures.
A Hamas functionary said the group had “reacted appreciatively” to the offer, but gave no further details.
The offer comes after Israel ended a ceasefire last week, egging a fresh round of air strikes that have killed hundreds of Palestinians.
Hamas, still, rejected Israel’s proposed amendments to the agreement. The recommendations are aimed at releasing further Israeli captures before addresses on an endless ceasefire begin. Hamas blazoned that it would release only 59 remaining captures, 24 of whom are believed to be alive, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian captures, an endless ceasefire, and an Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip.
