Two high-level US delegations will visit Pakistan next week to meet with top political and military leaders, including Pak-US counter-terrorism cooperation, but there will be no discussion on Imran Khan’s release during this visit.
Two high-level US delegations, According to Dawn News, the first delegation will visit from April 8 to 10, led by Eric Meyer, the US State Department’s senior official for South and Central Asian Affairs. During this time, the delegation will discuss issues related to increasing counter-terrorism cooperation between the two countries.
The second delegation, which will visit from April 10 to 15, will consist of US Congress members. Important issues such as economy, trade, defense, military relations, and education will be part of the agenda of the visit.
The aim of the congressional delegation’s visit is to promote bilateral relations between Pakistan and the US. US Congressmen General Jack Bergman and Tom Suzie will lead the delegation.
The congressional delegation will meet with the leadership of various political parties, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The delegation will also visit Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where they will be briefed on the latest situation in occupied Kashmir and the security situation along the Line of Control, while the US delegation will also visit the Tartarus Corridor.
It should be noted that the US delegation’s visit to Pakistan comes after Donald Trump imposed a 29% tariff on goods imported from Pakistan, as well as tariffs on dozens of countries, including rivals and allies, which has further intensified the global trade war.
The organizers of the visit have made it clear that the Congress delegation is not interested in Pakistan’s internal politics, so the delegation will not meet the PTI founder or discuss the issue of Imran Khan’s release.
It should be noted that on February 26 this year, US Congressmen Joe Wilson and August Pulger wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging him to negotiate with Pakistan to ensure the release of former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan.
Joe Wilson has been demanding the release of Imran Khan in several posts on the social networking website X over the past few weeks. The PTI founder has been arrested since August 2023 in multiple cases, which he describes as ‘political’.
