President announces reduction: The President reduced the sentences of prisoners by 180 days on Pakistan Day and Eid al-Fitr.
According to the Presidency, the President approved the reduction in sentences under Article 45 of the Constitution. The reduction in sentences will not apply to prisoners involved in murder, espionage, anti-state activities. The reduction in sentences will not apply to criminals convicted of rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism. The reduction in sentences will not apply to criminals convicted of financial crimes or those who damage the national treasury.
The Presidency further said that the reduction in sentences will be applied to male prisoners over the age of 65 who have served one-third of their sentences. The reduction in sentences will also be applied to female prisoners over the age of 60 who have served one-third of their sentences. In addition, the reduction in sentences will also be applied to female prisoners in prison with children. The reduction in sentences will also be applied to persons under the age of 18 who have served one-third of their sentences.
